They both decided that they'd do the pictures at the same time at opposite ends of Manhattan. Gullick was told that he could photograph Neil Young in his dressing room before his show at Madison Square Garden. Then Young decided to take the picture after the first part of the set. Fortunately Gullick knew his tour manager and he assured him that if he waited in a certain spot, he'd get Neil to him.
