Coming Straight Outta Compton

N.W.A. fans are in for a treat.

In a few weeks, the Dr. Dre and Ice Cube produced ‘Straight Outta Compton’ biopic is due to be released.

Their debut LP from which the film takes its name is often regarded as being one of the pioneering gangsta rap albums, with many of the lyrics referencing the everyday struggles they’d experienced on the streets of Compton in the mid ’80s.

The controversial song “Fuck tha Police” created a media storm that resulted in a warning letter from the FBI being issued to Easy-E’s label, Ruthless Records, complaining about the content, with them also being banned from playing at a number of venues the same year. This lead to them being branded the ‘World’s Most Dangerous Group’.

Straight Outta Compton sold a massive 750,000 copies even before N.W.A. had embarked on a tour, and was the first album to reach platinum status with virtually no airplay. To date, the album has sold over three million copies worldwide.

Without this album, hip-hop wouldn’t be the same today, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the rawness of this album translates in the film.

Another thing we love about N.W.A. is that they always looked cool as fuck. Streetwear has deep roots in rap, and many of the styles they were rocking back in the day still look as fresh today.

Athletic wear like baseball tees, basketball jerseys and classic tees from Adidas and Nike paired with loose-cut jeans or cargo pants and a massive gold chain and a formed a huge part of their look. Oversized button down shirts and jackets, crews and white kicks also became a staple for the group, and it was rare not to see them wearing classic black snapbacks.

Here’s our pick of products that pay homage to the classic N.W.A. street style.
