A guide to Boardmasters Festival

From the 5th-9th August, the town of Newquay, Cornwall is being taken over by the return of Boardmasters Festival – a high energy event, combining the best live music with surf, BMX and skate. Dating back to 1981 and attracting more than 30,000 fans each year, this massive event is a force to be reckoned with. Here’s our lowdown on the very best of Boardmasters –

What to expect

Spanning across two of the most magnificent beaches in the UK, you’ll be able to catch all kinds of awesome extreme sports going down at Fristal Beach, whilst Watergate Bay is the place to be for the acoustic lineups.

Fristal Beach is a vibrant scene, bringing Pro Surf competitions, custom built parks for BMX and skate competitions, art displays, and a shopping village.

Of course, no festival would be complete without fairground rides! So head down to Watergate Bay for funfair thrills with dodgems, cork shooter, bungee rocket, wave swinger and many more.

You’ll also find loads of food stalls across the festival, offering a wide variety of tastes and flavours from Italian, to Mexican, to local West country delicacies.

Who to see

Nine music stages are set to bring you a huge variety of sound this summer. Some of the top acts to fill your weekend with include Faithless, Rudimental, Lethal Bizzle, DJ EZ, Julio Bashmore and De La Soul.

Ripping colossal lines, turning nasty peaks, and smashing some serious crowd pleasing airs, surf competitors include Ben Skinner, Edouard Delpro, Ashleigh Bennetts, Alan Stokes, Jock Barnes and many more.

Watch the likes of Adam Keats, Cam Barr, Jed Cullen, and Reece Douglas shredding the ramps and pushing through awesome grabs and grinds at the skate competitions. Whether you consider yourself as a newbie skater, or an old school ripper, you’re in for a treat.

As the day comes to an end, head to the official After Dark parties throughout Newquay town. Here, local pubs and clubs provide a saving grace for late night ravers who just want to keep going, with headliners this year including Wilkinson, Eton Messy, Tazer and GotSome.

What to bring

Camping at Boardmasters can be as comfortable as sleeping at home when you’ve got a Poler napsack. Stay warm in it all night long, and then unzip the bottom and sides to turn it into a coat while you have brekkie on the beach.

With the weather set to be sizzling, grab your sunnies and a snapback. Odd Future have just dropped a sweet new collection of caps in a ton of colourways that are perfect for completing your festival look.

You can also grab an Odd Future towel,  inflatable donut pillow, beach ball and cool bag from this season’s collection.

Past Highlights

Boardmasters has enjoyed a history of high calibre performances from artists like Snoop Dogg, Dizzee Rascal, Chase & Status, Fatboy Slim and Sub Focus; and this year’s lineup is set to extend the festival’s reputation even further.

Sporting highlights have included The Waterton brothers – giving some of the older skate guys a run for their money, Jed Cullen beasting the ramps with rad kickflips in the Best Trick comps, Harry De Roth smashing the waves, and BMXer Jamie Eastwood hitting air highs of 10ft. Many past competitors are returning to Boardmasters this year, as well as a few new faces, so we can expect plenty of serious action to rival past years.

Get on Board

Whether you’ve been to Boardmasters before or not, this year’s festival covers all bases – sick sounds, sensational entertainment, and cutting-edge boarders on both waves and ramps. And, with all of this action set against a backdrop of stunning beach views, Boardmasters is going to be a huge highlight of your summer.
