Nike SB is almost untouchable when it comes to collaborations in the skateboarding world. Most recently, the Poler Stuff collaboration from last season proved very popular here at Attitude Inc., and to kick off 2016 they have again produced an excellent collaboration, this time in the form a Dunk High with American skate store Skatepark of Tampa. A top-tier Nike SB collaboration, this could be one of best Nike SB releases we’ve seen at the store for a while!
The shoe takes inspiration from the local Tampa legend that is Jose Gaspar, a Spanish pirate who pillaged the Florida coastline over 200 years ago. A number of pirate-inspired features can be found on the shoe which make clear the inspiration behind it, for example the carefully embroidered tonal cutlasses that sit cleanly on the toe-box and the parrot-feather-inspired multicolour collar design, which frays over time to make no two pairs of this shoe the same. This is a brilliantly used feature by Nike that we have seen before. For the Jordan Brand x Nike SB “Lance Mountain” collaboration we saw a pair of shoes get a coating of white or black paint which wore away as they were skated to reveal very familiar “bred” and “royal” colours on each shoe in the pair, again ensuring that no two pairs look exactly the same. Nike always use this to great effect, and both Skatepark of Tampa and themselves have used it perfectly here to let individuals add their own aspects to the shoe whilst also fitting with the theme of the shoe beautifully. Another Gaspar-inspired detail is the cache of gold doubloons that features on the insole of the shoe, a popular area for stores to customise when collaborating with Nike on the Dunk as we have seen with great releases like the Premier-produced “Petoskey Stone” collaboration. A perfect finishing pirate-touch to the shoe is the skull and crossbones featured on the tongue. It really is the little things, isn’t it?
Skatepark of Tampa have kept the colourway fairly low-key to let the interesting pirate-inspired features be the focal point of the shoe, but the colourway is very clean nonetheless. The upper is very dark grey, borderline black, which contrasts fantastically with the parrot-feather design on the collar. The lateral and medial Swooshes come in a lighter grey, to ensure that if you didn’t recognize the iconic silhouette just from its shape, you’d know once you saw the Swooshes exactly what you are looking at. The pull tab on the heel matches the colour of the Swooshes to take nothing away from the multicolour parrot-feather-inspired detailing on the collar, and the tongue and laces are both kept dark grey, almost black also to tone down the colourway. The second real hit of colour comes via the outsole. Coming in a striking red, it adds the perfect amount of colour to the shoe, when combined with the parrot-feather-style collar design, whilst not going over the top.
As for the more techy stuff, the carefully crafted insole of course features a built in Nike Zoom Air unit, meaning the shoe doesn’t lose those performance aspects. A nubuck upper is utilised to make the shoe very sturdy against the elements and of course, for skating, and the padded, mesh-style tongue remains for enhanced comfort. A full length EVA-foam midsole accompanies the Zoom Air unit in the insole providing even more comfort and stability. Basically, it’s a Nike Dunk High, with all of the great performance aspects of a usual Dunk High, but also in one of the best colourways with incredible details that we may have ever seen. What’s not to love?
Look out for these to release TODAY online at Attitude Inc. and in-store very soon. You’ll have to be quick though, because there is no way these are going to hang around for long!
