The classic model that is the Nike Dunk High receives another invigorating colourway this year. The “Waffle”, a term we so regularly associate with Nike SB’s rival Vans, is set to release this Saturday. The Cherry Blossom and SPoT Dunk High’s have been popular here at Attitude Inc., but this new release certainly blows the previous two out of the water in terms of outlandishness, and the originality behind the concept of the sneaker really is fantastic!
If you hadn’t noticed already, the inspiration behind the sneaker is of course the incredibly popular American breakfast (and for some, lunch and dinner) dish that is waffles. Supposedly, chicken and waffles is the favoured meal of a host of Nike SB pro skaters, and this was all the Nike design team needed to create one of the most visually striking SB Dunk High’s ever. There’s no half measures with this sneaker, the waffle inspiration is there for everyone to see, and Nike have executed it fantastically by taking such a crazy inspiration and somehow managing to make the final product look highly wearable. It’s making me hungry just looking at it!
The colourway itself is of course a glorious gold that glistens in daylight, which covers the whole of the upper of the sneaker. The chunky laces and tongue, which have been day one staples of the Dunk High, are kept tonal to give the sneaker a very sleek look, and to enhance the contrast with other aspects of the sneaker. One of these aspects is the translucent light-brown Swoosh, drizzled with a darker brown representing syrup, that sits on both the lateral and medial side of the sneaker. These Swooshes meet at the back of the sneaker, where the signature pull-tab has also been coloured light brown. The midsole and outsole of the sneaker are also light brown and translucent, creating a real pop against the upper, whilst never straying from that waffle theme that inspires the sneaker. Has a gum sole ever looked quite this good?
The sneaker is constructed from a premium waffle-woven fabric to create the unique upper, features a mesh tongue for added padding and comfort, and also has rubber outsoles for increased flexibility, ideal when skating. This is one of the best things about Nike SB. You can guarantee that no matter what sneaker they produce, whether it be the Koston 3 or this waffle-inspired Dunk High, technical performance features will always be given high priority. This sneaker also features the now-standard cupsole stitching for enhanced durability, a Zoom Air unit in the heel for added cushioning, and a pivot circle at the forefoot for multi-directional traction. This sneaker is tasty both to look at and in terms of performance!
These will be releasing at Attitude Inc., both in-store and online, at 9:30am on Saturday 2nd April. They are fairly limited, so act fast if you want a pair!
Final Thought – There’s a nice US-inspired cafe near the store, so cap off a perfect Saturday morning by copping these and then some real waffles afterwards!
