We always see excellent results when Saucony and Extra Butter team up, and the same can be said for AW16. The two have resumed their partnership and have created a Shadow 5000 titled “A Night at the Drive-In”, and while the shoe itself is pretty damn incredible, the concept behind it is even better. This has to go down as one of the best Saucony releases this year, and that’s no mean feat!
Extra Butter took inspiration from the US election which captivated the world not long ago, a main topic being the level at which each candidate was “for the people”. The NYC retailer launched the “For the People” Social Design Experiment, something that has never been done before, with the intention of letting the public have an instrumental role in deciding the outcome of the final sneaker. Everything, from the model to the materials, concept to the colourway, was continuously critiqued by the public, with two final samples (pictured above) even being given a Periscope live stream to let the audience give them a proper look over. The final result is the sneaker you see through the rest of the article, and its safe to say, you did well America!
The inspiration behind the shoe is certainly made clear by the promo shots and its title. Drive-in movie theatres and classic cars hark back to a great period in American history, and the shoe certainly encapsulates the feeling of both to perfection. The upper has been constructed from an incredibly premium Wolverine pig skin suede, very soft to touch and featuring perforations all over, with the mint colour serving as a great underlay for the soft blue full grain leather overlays to contrast against. The aforementioned represents the main body of the car, and red nubuck hits, providing Saucony branding on the sides and heel of the shoe, serve as taillights, standing out nicely yet complementing the colourway perfectly. White patent leather can be found wrapping around the heel providing the glossy look that graced cars back in the ’50s, as does the chrome blue patent leather hit at the top of the heel. Chrome silver hits can be found throughout, providing a bright trim for the colourway by appearing on the heel, sides of the midsole, top lace eyelet and also on the heel in an embroidered form spelling out “Extra” on one shoe and “Butter” on the other. Finally, the tongue features a woven design of two pink car dice and silver Extra Butter text, capping off an incredibly well executed colourway overall.
There’s not a single thing that has been left wanting with this shoe – even the box has been given a custom graphic makeover to fit the theme! We see a car akin to that in the pictures above sitting underneath a large blue and pink Extra Butter sign, very reminiscent of the movie theatre signs that you used to see everywhere. The shoe also performs just as good as it looks – it was developed as a runner originally, we mustn’t forget. EVA and PU Ionic cushioning is featured in the midsole, providing excellent impact cushioning and improving comfort overall vastly. Also, the staggered design of the sole lets you roll off of the board of your foot with each step, and the aggressive tread pattern on the outsole means you’ll never have to worry about traction through the winter months. Though with the precious materials that have been used to create the shoe, you’d want to be Jason Markk-ing them before they leave the house!
Due to incredible demand (understandable, this is one of the biggest releases of the year!) we’ve had to raffle off the pairs we’ve got here at Attitude. However, we do still have a UK 4 and UK 6 left, which unless they’re snapped up soon (via a DM to our Instagram) will be released online tomorrow morning, so if you want a pair, make sure you act fast!
