No brand is moving from strength to strength each season in as big a way as Polar. Under the creative guise of Pontus Alv, a man fast becoming a graphical genius, the brand is producing exceptional quality items every season, with a perfect blend of wardrobe staples and more exotic pieces, and a wide-ranging colour palette that rips up the script of traditional seasonal shades. The same formula has been applied for its Holiday ’16 release, in which Lavender and Dark Teal take centre stage in a bright collection that only further cements the Swedish label’s place at the pinnacle of the skateboarding world.
We saw some gorgeous Halberg Fleece Jackets last season from Polar, but it’s one-upped those and come back with two more, featuring the same name but even more fleecy thickness and functionality – on the left above we see a Black colourway, and on the right a Navy colourway. Both jackets will keep you in cosy warmth and comfort throughout the winter months, thanks to a polyester/acrylic exterior that provides a thick, flexible fleece material to repel the cold. A polyester lining also helps with the aforementioned whilst making the jacket much more comfortable too. The fit of the jackets is on point thanks to elasticated cuffs at the wrists and waist, and functional features include a two-way zip, stash zip pocket on the arm, two front hand pockets and a slightly funnelled neck design. The jackets themselves are the focal point here, and Polar has kept branding suitably minimal with only a tonal embroidered logo on the left of the chest of the jacket.
Moving down a layer, two Default PO Hoodies have arrived as part of the Holiday drop, and they come in the two colours that have played starring roles in the collection overall – Dark Teal, on the left above, and Lavender, on the right. Both feature a 100% cotton construction, which provides the softness, quality and thickness that we’ve come to expect from Polar hoodies over the years. They’re very functional too, with a raglan sleeve design providing improved freedom of movement, ribbed wrist and waist cuffs offering a streamlined fit, and a drawstring at the hood letting you tailor its fit to your preference. The kangaroo pockets on both are also useful because they let you securely store your possessions when skating, so there’s no area in which these hoodies fall short. On the centre of the chest we see Polar’s Default logo embroidered in white, perfectly capping off two simple yet gorgeous hoodies overall.
Sweatshirts is another area Polar has absolutely smashed this season – above we have the Striped Zip Neck Sweatshirt in Black, and the Zip Neck Sweatshirt in Dark Teal. The former features a cotton and acrylic blend construction, much like the Halberg Fleece, which makes it very soft and comfortable. Its fit is enhanced by the ribbed cuffs at the wrists and waist, and also by the quarter zip which provides a pullover style and streamlined feel. The basic black backdrop is set off nicely by the thin white stripes that run all across it, and the white embroidered Polar text logo on the left of the chest which perfectly rounds off a minimal and stylish sweatshirt overall. The latter features a poly/cotton blend construction, which again makes the sweatshirt incredibly soft and high quality, ensuring a great level of comfort. Also improving the aforementioned are the ribbed wrist and waist cuffs which provide a closer, snug fit, and the quarter zip design that helps form a slightly funnelled neck that’ll keep you warm throughout the colder months. Branding comes in the form of a tonal stroke logo on the left of the chest, again providing the subtle style that Polar can create so effortlessly.
Cut and sew pieces can be expected in a Polar collection, but this season the brand has even gone down that route with a short sleeve t-shirt and long sleeve t-shirt – the Zig Zag Gym Jersey and Micro Stripe T-Shirt respectively. The former, pictured on the left above, has been built using 80% rayon, 15% polyester and 5% spandex, creating a thick and soft jersey material reminiscent of a softer pique that’ll keep you suitably warm through the winter (this will definitely be an ideal base layer). It has a bit of stretch to it, which works with the short sleeves to provide great freedom of movement and make the t-shirt ideal for skating, and the ribbed neckline combined with the screened neck label improves comfort significantly. Finally, the eye-catching zig-zag all over pattern is perfectly complemented by white embroidered Polar text on the left of the chest. The latter, pictured on the right above, has been constructed using cotton to make it incredibly soft and very high in quality. Ribbed cuffs feature at the wrists to provide a more aerodynamic fit, and the ribbed neckline again improves comfort vastly when working in conjunction with the screened neck label. The all-over stripe pattern is overlayed with navy blue embroidered Polar text on the left of the chest, creating a nice and cohesive colourway.
T-shirts have of course been graced with cute graphics this season – we have the Freak Faces T-Shirt on the left in Lavender, and the AMTK T-Shirt on the right in White. Both have been created using cotton, making them relatively thick and with a nice weight behind them, and also very soft to ensure a relaxed and comfortable fit. Cotton maximises the vivid nature of the Lavender t-shirt very nicely, and provides a suitable backdrop for the abstract Freak Faces graphic to be screen printed onto the front and back in purple, pink and lavender. For the AMTK t-shirt it provides a crisp white backdrop for the unique AMTK graphic in blue, black, orange and more on the back of the t-shirt and light blue Polar text on the left of the chest. Both t-shirts are highly accessible and versatile thanks to their short sleeve designs, and will add a nice pop of colour to your probably dark autumn/winter wardrobe.
Polar’s accessories range has again expanded this season with a style of hat that we’ve not seen before, the Dane Doodle Cap, which arrives in Black and has been made from a cotton twill. While the title says black, the real colour is more like a heavily washed and faded black, with a very vintage and worn-in look reminiscent of some old school Polo Sport or Hilfiger (given the amount of quarter-zips, they may have actually served as inspirations for this collection!). Finally, the Dane Doodle graphic has been embroidered onto the front of the cap in a tonal colour to make the cap nicely lowkey, letting the unique colourway do the talking. While that’s a foray into new territory for the Swedish brand, it has also blessed us with more colourways in a firm fan favourite – the Happy Sad Socks. Above on the right is a new Pastel Blue colourway, with navy details toning things down nicely, and we also see Orange, Black and Lavender pairs, so there’s something for everyone. All of the socks have been made using a blend of cotton/poly/spandex, to create the perfect soft, stretchy, comfortable and durable socks that’ll do you for day to day and for skating as well.
Polar’s ability to switch things up and produce some incredibly high quality menswear-like items is something that can only be admired, and the brand has come through this season with the Card Wallet and Ring Belt, both coming in Brown and Black colourways. The former, pictured on the left above, has been made using 100% leather and features an additional leather carry strap. The single fold design with four compartments for cards makes it very streamlined, and if it wasn’t already stylish enough, there’s an embossed Stroke Logo on one side. At 7.5cm x 9.5cm, it is a handy size that won’t be any sort of inconvenience, so if you want to keep your possessions stored in style, look no further. The Ring Belt has been made in Poland also using 100% genuine leather, giving it a level of quality that would not normally be expected from a skate brand. The debossed tail end of course features a Stroke Logo, and a circular buckle ensures a refined and minimal aesthetic.
It’s safe to say this is one hell of a collection from Polar. Who knows what else the future holds for the Swedish label – all we can say is, roll on Spring and Summer 2017!
