There are few brands that are as overtly proud of their American heritage and residence as Saucony. In the last few months alone we’ve seen the Dirty Snow Pack, consisting of three sneakers in colourways dedicated to the harsh Boston winters, and the Liberty Pack, which saw the GRID 9000 given two highly patriotic colourways. One of Saucony’s highlights of last year was the Letterman GRID 9000, which saw the classic model draped in shades of grey, black and red with chenille details to resemble the timeless college jackets that can be found on campuses and streets across the country. Carrying on the trend of patriotism this year, Saucony has reintroduced the Letterman colourway, this time on a Shadow 5000. And it must be said, it looks better than ever!
A distinctive heather wool forms the majority of the upper, coming in a very dark grey colour and paying homage to the wool construction of most letterman jackets. Giving the shoe a very premium feel are the black supple leather hits, which wrap around the heel and also form the instantly recognisable three dots logo on the lateral and medial sides of the shoe. Chenille also makes an appearance, forming an “S” logo on the tongue that is highly reminiscent of the chenille text that can be found adorning many a letterman jacket – it’s evident that Saucony have paid attention to detail once again. Contrasting strongly against the upper is a crisp white midsole, and adding a vintage feel is the rich gum outsole, perfectly capping off a silky colourway overall.
The Shadow 5000 was one of the most successful running silhouettes of the ’80s, and for very good reason. Cushioning may have taken on much more advanced forms nowadays, but the Shadow 5000 remains a shoe that performs just as good as it looks. A full EVA midsole, designed to support the movement of the foot, provides incredible protection against impacts and a much softer, smoother walking experience overall, and the added panels on the upper and TPU heel counter provide excellent stability. All that makes for a comfy, supportive sneaker overall, and that, combined with the Letterman colourway, makes for one hell of a shoe overall.
