It has been quite the week here at Attitude. First we saw the Vans Gilbert Crockett Pro 2 in a stylish Ivy Green colourway, and now ASICS and adidas Skateboarding have thrown their hats into the Spring/Summer ring again with three of the best shoes you’re going to see all year. The occasion is particularly momentous for ASICS, as the arrival of the GEL Kayano Trainer Knit marks the brand’s first foray into the knitted footwear world. That’s not to say, though, that the Adi-Ease Premiere Classified “Gonz” in Coral Pink that adidas has produced isn’t one of the most summer-ready shoes we’ve ever seen.
The GEL Kayano Trainer Knit really is something to behold. An amazing advertising campaign has been created in support of the shoe, juxtaposing black and white models in all-black or all-white outfits with Kayanos to match, which you can check out here. It demonstrates the true versatile nature of the shoe – some of the models look catwalk-ready with very avant-garde outfits that at the same time wouldn’t look out of place on a running track, and the Kayano Trainer Knit works with both aesthetics perfectly. Sleek and low profile thanks to a fully knitted upper that is unbelievably flexible, you can choose a clean triple white colourway or a more basic triple black colourway (no doubt your ability to keep shoes clean will have a large effect on your decision!). The Kayano’s trademark cage-like overlays form ASICS’ tiger stripes on the lateral and medial sides as usual, and also the heel cage, which is more important than ever in providing a secure fit. The midsole of course still features GEL cushioning, providing the impact protection and improved comfort that has been helping runners and sneaker fans alike for over twenty years now, and the outsole still features that aggressive tread pattern for optimum traction no matter what the surface.
Less innovative but certainly keeping up with the Kayano Knit in the style stakes is the Adi-Ease Premiere Classified, which has been given the Gonz treatment for the second time this season. A radical coral pink, akin to that on the Matchourt RX, has been splashed across the full leather upper, encompassing the Three Stripes on the lateral and medial sides and the tongue too. Custom text by the man himself, skateboarding legend Mark Gonzales, features all over the upper in black, matching the Gonz logo on the tongue nicely, and Gonz branding features in the form a blue tab on the heel of the crisp white midsole. Capping things off is a gum outsole, adidas had to add something with a vintage vibe to it, after all.
The shoe performs every bit as good as it looks, with a host of skate-optimised technology being incorporated. An EVA sockliner sits inside the shoe, providing a soft footbed that will protect you against the harsh impacts of skating. Boardfeel isn’t sacrificed thanks to the sole being vulcanized, which makes it thinner yet even more durable than a standard sole, and the outsole features a herringbone traction pattern for great grip. So, if you do wish to skate the shoe, you certainly won’t be disappointed.
