Gilbert Crockett has been one of Vans’ most unique pro skaters for some time now, and his signature skate shoe has been updated beautifully for Spring ’17. With a more streamlined aesthetic, plus even more performance-enhancing features than the previous model, this is sure to be one of the standout shoes of the year. The opening colourway, Ivy Green/Black, might just be one of the best we’ll ever see, too!
As is the case with many a Vans shoe, the upper comes in a mixture of suede and canvas. The former features around the toebox in black, enhancing durability in a typically high abrasion area and providing a very nice complement for the black midsole. The latter features around the midfoot and heel in an olive green colour, providing great flexibility to let you skate with pure freedom of movement. Also at the heel, the leather top that we saw on the first Crockett Pro remains, adding a subtle touch of class. Vans’ stripe has been fused onto the upper in a similar olive green, making the shoe appear much sleeker, and dual Gilbert Crockett/Vans branding on the tongue also comes in a more low-key form than on the first shoe. Finally, the outsole does of course come in gum, guaranteeing that vintage style that Vans always gets oh so right. If this colourway doesn’t quite take your fancy, there’s also a more simple Black/White colour-up, pictured below.
It’s a fact that the shoe performs as good as, if not even better, than it looks. An UltraCushHD sockliner remains inside the shoe, providing a spongy footbed that’ll protect you against the harsh impacts experienced when skating. A moulded heel pocket insert, combined with the sturdy external heel counter, ensures a locked-in fit that allows you to skate in the confidence that your feet won’t be sliding around. The Wafflecup sole construction utilises the support and deep fit of a cupsole and the boardfeel and durability of a vulcanized sole, something that no other brand offers, and the modified multi-directional waffle outsole pattern offers unparalleled grip. Capping things off (no pun intended) are Duracap overlays around the front of the midsole, fused-on additional layers of rubber that improve durability hugely. There’s simply no area in which the shoe falls short!
