With each new clothing season recently, Stussy has been getting better and better, crafting a new aesthetic that only a few years ago would have been thought impossible. The Cali streetwear label made its name all the way back in the ’80s and up to the present day with big, brash graphics, but Spring ’17 sees the brand take a revitalised approach, concentrating on smaller graphics and letting well-executed colourways do the talking. In a world saturated with street/skate brands at the moment who are all trying to be louder than the one before them, we have to say, this is refreshing from Stussy – and one of the many reasons it is still at the top of the streetwear pyramid.
Leading the subtle style of the new collection are the Buana and Lil Stu T-Shirts, on the left and right above respectively. Both constructed from cotton, they bear the same high quality we’ve come to expect from Stussy, and come in gorgeous Salmon and Light Brown shades. If those aren’t to your taste, you can find both styles in other colours here – there’s definitely something that’s suited to you. They feature short sleeves, ideal as we approach the hotter summer weather (or so we hope!), and ribbed necklines for improved comfort and reduced friction. The Buana tee sees vertical Stussy text screen printed on the left of the chest, with a ring circling the lowest point of the T, and the Lil Stu tee sees horizontal Stussy text in the Basic font with a thick outline screen printed onto the chest, small in size. The small sizes of the graphics means both of these t-shirts will complement any outfit nicely, without drawing too much attention.
The hoodies in the latest drop are similarly minimal. On the left we have the Block Hooded Jersey in Pine/Pink, and on the right we have the Basic Hood in Light Brown. The Block Hooded Jersey is certainly a loud piece, but follows the same approach as the majority of the latest drop with the colourway doing all the talking. Created using cotton, it is remarkably soft and comfy, with ribbing at the waist and wrists ensuring a streamlined, cozy fit. The fit is also enhanced by the rugby polo-style placket, which in turn makes it easier to get the hoodie on and off too, and it’s relatively heavy weight means you can stay warm all year round. Stussy text outlined in white has been embroidered onto the torso, arching just below the placket, and takes nothing away from the colourway – in fact, it’s a nice complement to it.
The Basic Hood has also been made using cotton – but a polyester fleece has been added to the mix, creating a soft lining that’ll keep you warm and comfy. Ribbing again features at the wrists and waist, providing an aerodynamic fit, and the hood is adjustable via a drawstring. Storage is offered by the kangaroo pocket on the torso, and finally, Stussy’s simplistic Basic logo has been screen printed onto the chest and back in Black. One of those pieces you really can’t go wrong with, thanks to its versatile colourway and minimal branding.
While a low-key approach does characterise most of the collection, Stussy hasn’t strayed too far from its roots. The Future Past Tee on the left and Dead Roses Tee on the right are perfect for those of you that want something a bit bolder across your shoulders this summer. They’ve both been made using cotton, giving them a great level of quality and offering a relaxed, comfortable fit. The short sleeves mean you’ll stay ventilated throughout the hotter weather, and the necklines are ribbed to take comfort to unprecedented levels. The Future Past tee bears an awesome graphic on the back made of numerous different colours, in a very high quality screen print, and the Dead Roses tee bears a greyscale roses graphic that’s perfect for those of you that aren’t quite ready to adopt pastel shades.
Outerwear this season perfectly balances the cute style that remains throughout the collection, and the functionality demanded by most streetwear enthusiasts nowadays. On the left above, the California Jacket rides the wave of the hottest outerwear trend of the last two summers, the souvenir jacket. Featuring a 96% polyester 4% spandex satin build, the jacket’s exterior has a real shimmer to it, perfect for the sunshine summer offers, and there’s ribbing at the wrists, collar and waist for a closer fit. The sleeves feature a raglan design, providing pure freedom of movement around the shoulder area, and a full zip closure system at the front makes it easy to get the jacket on and off. Storage is provided by the two welted front pockets and additional interior pocket, and finally, California text with a flower either side has been embroidered onto the back in white, pink and green. It must be said – this is some of the best quality embroidery you’ll ever see on a jacket.
The 3M Ripstop Jacket is perfect for those of you looking for function as much as form. Featuring a full zip placket that forms a higher-cut collar for a streamlined fit, the jacket is remarkably streamlined and aerodynamic, with the polyester ripstop exterior being incredibly resistant to both wind and rain. The wrists are elasticated to offer a closer fit, and storage is vast and secure thanks to the three welted and zip-closure front pockets. 3M piping runs across the torso and sleeves, shining bright under light along with the 3M Stussy text logo on the left sleeve.
You’re unlikely to find a Spring/Summer ’17 collection that balances simple and heavy graphics, lighter and darker colours, function and form, as well as this one from Stussy. Cop a few bits for yourself before it’s gone, because one thing is for certain, this won’t hang around if the hotter weather and bright sunshine continues!
