Dear Polar, An Homage to Ron Chatman

Dear Skating has found its niche in the skateboarding market, producing collections based on iconic individuals and teams from years gone by. For Fall ’17, the brand has teamed up with one of the hottest skateboarding brands of the moment, Polar, to honour World Industries cult figure Ron Chatman. The result is the perfect mix of bright colours, high quality, and old-school graphics.

Certainly the two most old-school pieces are the Block Stripe Polo Longsleeve and the Block Stripe Tee. The former features a thick cotton build, with ribbed wrist cuffs enhancing both comfort and fit. Classic polo shirt features include the dropped back hem, covered three button placket and contrasting white collar. Across the whole polo we see heavy colour blocked pattern, comprised of thick navy and yellow stripes. So very ’90s.

The Block Stripe Tee features a similar approach to the polo before it, but in a more toned-down style. Shades of teal and aqua run across the body and sleeves, with the neckline and Polar Stroke logo on the chest coming in the darker teal too. Constructed exclusively form cotton, the t-shirt bears the same high level of quality that we’ve come to expect from Polar.

The two graphic t-shirts are where Ron Chatman and Dear’s input really comes to prominence. The TV Kid Tee, on the left above in Turquoise, features a full cotton construction and ribbed neckline for maximum comfort. At the left of the waist we see a screen printed TV Kid graphic, one designed by Ron back in the ’90s, depicting an alien of sorts with a TV in his stomach.

On the right above we have the Ron Chatman Pro Tee in White. Again made using cotton and with a ribbed neckline, you’re getting a relaxed-fitting t-shirt that will give you no comfort issues. On the left of the chest we see a red screen printed graphic designed by Ron, akin to a cat. More visibly, the back features a screen printed graphic of one of Ron’s alien-style designs as a push bike, and accompanying “Chatman, Ron” text.

There did of course have to be decks in the range, and they’re arguably the best pieces in the collection. Two of them are pictured above, the Team Block Stripe deck on the left, and the Ron Chatman Gues Pro deck on the right. The former follows the style of the Longsleeve Polo before it, with heavy navy and wood-coloured stripes running horizontally across the bottom of the deck. Just by the tail there’s a printed graphic of a polar bear of sorts, again designed by Ron. The board has a standard shape, and a width of 8.5 inches.

Certainly the bolder of the two, the Ron Chatman Guest Pro deck features a vivid yellow base colour and subtle “Chatman, Ron” text near the left of the tail. The focal point, though, is of course the green Kid graphic showing one of Ron’s aliens in the form of a bike, and the blue cat-like figure just above it. Every bit as quirky as we’ve come to expect from Ron over the years. All of the decks have been made using 7-ply Canadian Maple Wood.

Everything pictured above, and more, can be found both on our website and in our Colchester store. If you’ve been craving some ’90s-styled goodness since Dear’s last drop, your prayers have certainly been answered.
