Adidas had an absolutely stellar 2017, particularly from a skateboarding perspective, with a variety of great collabs and fresh new designs. The latter trend looks set to continue through 2018 – it’s the first month of the year and the Three Stripes is releasing another new model, the City Cup, which releases in three stripped-back colourways that radiate versatility.
The first of the three is a colourway that adidas loves to utilise – Crystal White/Black/Gum. The toebox area comes in an off-white suede, very durable in nature and providing a very smooth colour. Perforations on the forefoot area and white leather tongue work well with the mesh lining around the heel and ankle to enhance breathability, and you need not worry about stability, because the mesh at the back of the shoe is overlayed with a vulcanized rubber. Branding is nice and minimal, with adidas’ signature Three Stripes coming in black on the lateral and medial sides, and there’s tonal white adidas text and a Trefoil logo on the heel for good measure. The sole comes in gum, providing that vintage look that adidas utilises oh so well.
The two other colourways are lovely and simple, suitable for just about any outfit you’ll piece together. On the left above we have a white colourway with an icy blue sole, and on the right above we have a murdered out triple black colourway. Both feature a supple but tough leather that wraps around the heel and toebox, perfect for withstanding the strains of skating, with added perforations for enhanced breathability. Again, vulcanized rubber has been added around the heel and midfoot for a more stable, secure fit, and the internal mesh lining guarantees a great level of comfort. The black pair is very straightforward, featuring a black upper, sole, tongue and laces, but the white pair have the added bonus of an icy blue outsole, setting things off nicely.
From a tech perspective these shoes are quite fantastic. As has been previously mentioned, durability is the priority with these – you can take your pick of a tough suede or leather upper, and both pairs feature a high cut midsole for greater durability when attempting flip tricks. Responsive cushioned sockliners have been added to put a spring in your step and protect your feet against harsh landings, and finally, a wavy herringbone traction pattern guarantees great grip at all times.
